8:27 pm

backstage at Southport Arts Centre

sometimes you show up to a gig and go, “Whoa!  Am I really playing here?  Cool!”  Southport is like that.  I’ll post a picture so you can see the outside.

Cara is onstage playing her set right now.  She’s playing with her partner Hugh.  Cara used to be with the Wailin’ Jennys.  She is very good and is right up my alley, music-wise.

Zak and I have  an hour til we go on.  Tonight is a double bill, which means that Cara and I get equal billing and equal stage time.  She went up first, at 8pm, and will play til about 9:10.  Then Z and I will start about 9:30 and go til 10:30 and leave another 10 minutes or an encore of a song or two.

I can’t believe that, after tonight, Zak and I have only two more shows together.  And then it’s done.  I started to get just a little teary about it last night at dinner, and he asked me what was wrong.  “Nothing,” I said.  I don’t need to.  He already knows.

Whatever.  We’ll be fine.  I’ll be fine and he’ll be fine and we’ll both be totally fine.  And we’ll be great friends for probably the rest of our lives.  Or at least the next couple years.  :-)

I am really eager to find other folks to play with.  Help me give it good positive thoughts and let’s see if we can’t urge the universe to manifest something incredibly fucking wonderful and beautiful and cool!

So we’ll do our set tonight, work the merch booth, then drive an hour back to our hotel in Middlewich.  I planned it like that to help cut down on our drive time tomorrow.

Tomorrow we’re on the road by 10:30am, driving 3 hours way south to Bath, giving our performance/workshop there at the American Museum form 3:30-4:30.  Then we’ve got an interview with someone at 5.  Then Nick Lawson, one of our biggest fans in the UK, is taking us out to dinner.  After that, we drive an hour and 10 minutes to our hotel for that night.

Next day we’re on the road by 10am, driving 3 hours to Leigh on Sea, playing a one hour set at about 3-4.  Then Zak drives me to Stansted airport where I catch an 8pm flight to Newcastle.  Meanwhile, Zak will be driving another couple hours to the other side of London, to Heathrow airport, where he’ll return the car, check into his Travelodge for the night, and catch his flight to Boston the next morning.

Me?  I’ll arrive to Newcastle, take a cab to my hotel where Rod Clements will pick me up the next morning, and he and I will drive to Berwick Upon Tweed, where we’ll probably have a rehearsal and then play our first gig that night at The Maltings Theatre.  Then he and I have 5 more gig after that, ending us down south again near London on July 5.  And I fly home to Portland July 6.

In short: gonna be a busy week.

Better go warm up a little bit now.
